CHAPTER TEN

“Are you sure he’ll be okay with you guys?” Cuddling Trash to her chest once more, she committed his sweet little meow to memory before letting him go to scamper throughout Maggie and Tom’s house. They were preparing to leave town on the hunt for clues to Walker’s whereabouts and traveling in a car for days on end was not the place for a cat. Her heart ached at the thought of not sleeping with him at night.

“Mori, he’ll be fine. I’ll feed him in his favorite dish, spoil him with treats, and make sure he gets plenty of playtime with the laser pointer.” Maggie sympathized with her friend, understanding the bond between the two. Mori had not spent a night away from the cuddly creature since the day she had found him.

Mori choked back a lump in her throat, not wanting to look insane in front of the three hunks waiting for her in the van. Nodding, she was afraid to speak for fear of her voice cracking. Maggie hugged her tightly and whispered, “Go find your man.”

The two best friends had been exchanging text messages all morning, Mori fitting as much detail into the form of communication as possible. Maggie was now up-to-date on the happenings with Walker, the others, and her feelings for each of them.

“I’m glad you forgave yours,” she whispered back to Maggie.

Maggie had also shared her relief at the tentative do-over she was attempting with her husband, including the hours of makeup sex. Maggie blushed furiously as they pulled away from each other, but she winked as Mori called goodbye to her furry companion safely tucked within the walls of the house.

Shoes quietly crunching over the pea gravel, she made her way to the van to start their road trip. The guys weren’t in their seats, but she could hear their hushed voices around the driver’s side of the van. She stopped at the sound of Remi’s voice tainted with an unfamiliar inflection—anger.

“You’ve got to stop being such a righteous asshole. What the hell were you thinking, dropping the strip club on her like a bomb?”

Silence sounded for only a second before it was shattered by a low growl, followed by Kai’s gruff voice. “I meant it as a challenge, never expecting it to go this far. I didn’t anticipate her stepping up and actually agreeing to do this mission. It’s a strip club, for god’s sake, I thought that would be her breaking point and she’d walk away!”

Remi responded but it was too muffled to make out his words.

He didn’t mean to be an asshole. He’s just pushing me to see how far I’ll go.

Well, challenge fucking accepted.

Scuffing her feet a little louder on the pavement, she tried to hide her smile as she called out, “You guys ready to go, or are you gonna gossip like a bunch of hens?” Their voices cut off immediately, and Remi came around the van first with a sheepish grin. She winked before opening the side door and taking a seat in the van she had been kidnapped in once before.
